The life of Madison River Communications, a small, rural wireline service provider with operations in seven states, was brief. Founded in 1999, it was purchased by CenturyTel (now CenturyLink) in 2007. Nonetheless, Madison River will live forever as the poster child for those who believe Internet regulation (aka net neutrality) is necessary to preserve the “transformative power of the Internet.”
