The bandwidth made available to broadband subscribers is typically lower than that which could be supported by the broadband access technology employed by the provider. This is most frequently the case with digital subscriber line (DSL) connections, but also applies to fiber to the premises (FTTP), cable DOCSIS, and wireless technologies. Application-driven bandwidth (ADB) dynamically allocates incremental bandwidth when specific service flows are encountered.
The Zeugma SmartVideo application employs deep session inspection (DSI) functionality integrated into the Zeugma Services Node (ZSN) in order to detect the presence of flows requiring processing. The ZSN traffic plane copies flow traffic up to the SmartVideo application so that the data flow itself is not delayed. The SmartVideo application can then, depending on policy, instruct the underlying traffic management system to dynamically increase bandwidth allocated to that flow. During the session, the Zeugma SmartMonitor application can be used to dynamically produce a mean opinion score (MOS). Upon session termination, the SmartVideo application generates settlement records for external billing systems.
